Wheat For Man?

May 24th, 2008

Wheat is a grain that has been said by prophets of God to be good for man. Grains should be the staff of life according to God.

Why then are there so many people that will tell you to avoid grains, and wheat in particular?

Let's take a look at what we know about wheat.

Wheat contains plenty of nutrients. In fact one of the interesting studies that has been done with mice is to feed them different diets over long periods of time. You see, it is estimated that mice metabolism is very much like human metabolism. So, they test stuff on mice and then assume that it will have the same or similar effects on humans. One advantage of testing with mice is that a month in the life of a mouse is like a year in a humans life. So you can run what would be a 3 year study in humans, in just 3 months with mice. So anyway, they fed these mice all kinds of different diets for long periods of time, even over generations of mice. One of the things that they discovered was that they could live healthy lives for generations eating just wheat and powdered milk.

So, if you are looking for what you could survive on long term for emergency food storage, consider wheat and powdered milk.

One thing you should know about mice though, is that their bodies create Vitamin C. Our bodies do not create Vitamin C. Wheat contains very little vitamin C, so eat those fruits and veggies!

One question that many people ask is what kind of wheat is better, white or red? Looking at nutritional data on them it is kind of a toss up. I tend to prefer the red myself. Red or darker colored foods generally have more phytonutrients that don't show up on nutrition labeling. Plus I like the nuttier taste.

Wheat is even healthier for humans when it is sprouted, and easy to eat. Another cool thing that was recently discoverd about wheat is that it contains nearly as many antioxidants as fruits and vegetables do. The thing is that they are contained more in the structure of the cells and so instead of being released quickly like in fruit, they are released gradually over time as the grain is digested in you system. Sort of a natural time released capsule of antioxidants!

Now back to why many people, even some doctors and nutritionists, tell you to avoid wheat. One of the most identified allergies is to wheat gluten. Why is this? Well, unfortunately most wheat consumed in the Standard American Diet (SAD) is processed and refined wheat. It has most of the goodness of the whole grain stripped away from it. What is left is a substance that is just a drain on the human body. Because the nutrition is mostly gone, the body has to try and process the intake of this kind of food without having the proper resources to do so. Instead of helping the body to grow strong, like whole grain products do, it is much more like a toxin that just causes the body problems.

The Standard American Diet also creates a problem known as leaky gut. This allows partially digested food to enter the blood stream in chunks that would normally be to large to enter the blood stream. These larger chunks of food are seen as foreign invaders in the blood stream so the body creates an allergic reaction to try to take care of them. It has also been discovered that the use of aspirin and NSAIDs specifically contribute to the entry of wheat proteins into the blood.

So, if you already have a wheat allergy, you will have to avoid wheat while you get your gut healthy again. After you get your leaky gut taken care of (about 6 months of no processed foods or drugs) you can slowly reintroduce wheat back into your diet. Just make sure it is whole wheat.

Whole wheat has another very cool ability. It is one of the best things you can find to balance the acid/alkaline systems of the body. Many of those who tell people to avoid grains are the same people who tell you to learn to eat for your body type. If you study eating for your body type, you find out that it is actually all about balancing the bodies acid/alkaline ratios. So instead of memorizing lists of what you can and can't eat, just get your gut healthy and then eat plenty of wheat on a regular basis.

Wheat is very good for building a good strong body. It is plentiful and easy to use. One of my favorite things to do is to just throw wheat into a crock pot with 3 times as much water as wheat. Set the crock pot on low before going to bed at night. When you wake up in the morning you have a delicious and nutritious cereal ready to eat. Add honey and milk for a great breakfast.

Freshly ground wheat also makes a healthy and delicious bread or cereal. Add in a little powdered milk, salt, and water and you are good to go. For a simple recipe just use about 4 cups of freshly ground whole wheat flour, approximately 2 cups of water, 2 teaspoons of Redmond's RealSalt, and 2 Tablespoons of powdered milk. You may have to adjust the amounts of water and wheat a little bit depending on what type of wheat you are using. This makes a bread that is good tasting and that you could live off, if you needed to. I quite often just eat it plain, but I also like to eat mine with butter and honey, both excellent health promoting foods. Honey is another of those things you can very easily add to food storage supplies.

I have heard of a retreat that is held in a mountainous area to help people regain health and vigor. They go into the mountains and hike and camp for exercise and fresh air. The only food they take is freshly cracked wheat.

Wheat is even more nutritious when it is sprouted! Sprouted wheat is naturally sweet and delicious to just grab and snack. A great improvement to the above bread recipe is to use a half cup or a cup of wheat sprouts in place of one of the cups of whole wheat flour. This makes the bread more moist and sweet and delicious. Put a little raw honey on that and you have a wonderful meal or snack. Oh, man, I'm making my self hungry!

Good News For Allergy Sufferers

I also have good news for anyone out there that might have gluten allergy problems. You can get the goodness of wheat from wheat grass or wheat grass juice without any gluten. Wheat grass is actually an even better source of nutrition than the wheat grains. As wheat grass grows it pulls the nutrients from the soil and becomes an even better source of minerals and enzymes. The gluten stays in the grain seed, and as long as you harvest the grass before it goes to seed and creates new grains, the grass is also gluten free.

Now I know that most of you don't want to go to the trouble of planting and harvesting your own wheat grass, so here is a link to the company that perfected the process of harvesting wheat grass and freeze drying it into a powder that retains all the phytonutrients, chlorophyll, antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. They grow everything organically, so there are no pesticides to worry about. Click here to get the Original Certified Organic Wheat Grass Juice Powder.
