Triglycerides: Friend or Foe?

February 7th, 2008

You generally only hear of triglycerides spoken of in negative terms. They are usually only referred to in the context of there being too many. High triglycerides are known to be a sign of danger for heart disease, stroke, and pancreatitis.

But triglycerides are not bad guys. We need them. Triglycerides are fats that have been digested and are circulating in the blood waiting to be used by the body for energy. If the body needs them for energy they are ready to be used. If you don't use them for energy then the body will have to take them and store them in fat.

With that understanding can you see what the easy way to lower high levels of triglycerides would be? That's right! Exercise regularly. Get at least 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 times a week. 5 or 6 times a week would be better. But don't do the same exercise every day, cause that just causes burn out.

The medical community likes to use drugs called fibrates to help lower high levels of triglycerides. These drugs cause nausea, diarrhea, and upset stomach.

It has also been discovered that supplementation with Niacin is as effect as using fibrates. Niacin is vitamin B3. It seems that vitamin B3 deficiency is a causative factor in high triglyceride levels as well as high cholesterol levels.

So, it would be good for us all to make sure that we are getting good sources of the B vitamins in our diets as well as good sources of proteins. If we get good protein sources then our bodies can actually make vitamin B3 from the protein tryptophan.

Eat good whole grains as a good source of fiber and protein. Eating raw natural (organic) fruits and vegetables will also make sure you get good nutrition. Raw milk from grass fed cows is ideal as well as farm fresh eggs from cage-free chickens fed good clean diets.

Triglycerides can be dangerous if they are too high, and we can really be down and out if they are too low. But a good clean lifestyle can balance out the bodies systems to make everything work just the way it should.

Just eat a high quality natural foods diet, exercise, drink plenty of good clean water, make sure you get fiber (whole raw foods), get plenty of sleep, breathe deeply and have a gratitude attitude.

Your body will take care of you, if you take care of it.
