Throw Away The Scale!March 21st, 2008
Listening to the radio the other day, I hear this woman talking about how she can't seem to drop the last 20 pounds of weight she wants to lose. I decide to listen a little longer. It turns out this lady is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 104 pounds. She is so obsessed about her weight that she has three scales that she weighs herself on regularly.
This is an extreme example of the American obsession with weight, but there are many women and even some men who are overly sensitive about their weight. This lady, obviously, is not overweight and if she were to lose another 20 pounds she would most likely be very near death. Fortunately, the radio personality told her that she needed to get some counseling and that she did not need to lose any more weight. Of course, there are many Americans who are overweight and really do need to lose some fat to become more healthy. Some people need to gain weight to be more healthy. Some people don't need to gain or lose weight, but they still need to improve their health. One suggestion for all: Throw away the scale! You see, the number of pounds that you weigh doesn't really matter. What matters is what kind of shape you are in. A scale cannot tell you that. If you can walk up a flight of stairs without needing to take a break at the top, you are doing OK. If you don't get the cold that everyone else is passing around, then you are doing OK. If you have energy to do all the stuff you need to do during the day, you are doing OK. The important thing is to try to improve yourself a little each day. As long as you are progressing towards a better you, keep it up. Don't expect dramatic turn-arounds. Don't stress over things that don't really matter. If you want to get in better shape, exercise. Vary your exercises so that you work different muscles. Drink plenty of water. Your body weight in pounds divided by 15 is the number of cups of water to aim for daily (as a general rule). Eat good food. Eat small portions at least every three hours. Most of what you eat should be fresh and raw. Choose fruit, nuts, berries, vegetables, and whole grains. Grains are probably the most important, because they tend to be the most balancing to the body. Get good sleep every night. That means about 8 hours with at least 2 hours of that before midnight. Think happy thoughts. Count your blessings every night before going to sleep. It will help you sleep better. Count your blessing each morning after waking. It will help you have a better day. The point is, just keep trying to improve your lifestyle little by little. Your health will continue to improve as you do so. Just eat a high quality natural foods diet, exercise, drink plenty of good clean water, make sure you get fiber (whole raw foods), get plenty of sleep, breathe deeply and have a gratitude attitude. Your body will take care of you, if you take care of it. Coach G. Success in health comes from lifestyle described here.
