Why Are Resveratrol and Red Wine Always In The News?

January 10th, 2008

What is resveratrol?

Why is it in the news?

What has it got to do with wine?

Remember that when you see a health study in the news, it doesn't necessarily mean that a new study has just come out. It simply means that someone has released a new news release to try to get attention.

Alcoholic beverages have been slowly, gradually falling out of favor, and therefore their advertising possibilities have been limited. Sending out a news release is a form of nearly free advertising. It also automatically gives an air of legitimacy to the "study" that it talks about.

The beverage companies know that alcohol is detrimental to health, but they still want to sell their product. So they get someone to analyze it and find something good about it. They found out that red wine contains resveratrol which is a substance that helps to fight free radicals in the body. So they ignore that drinking even just one small drink of an alcoholic beverage kills brain cells and tell you that red wine is good for you.

Is resveratrol good for you?

Yes, it is!

Is red wine good for you?

No, it is not!

It's like when Bill Cosby fed his kids chocolate cake for breakfast. He reasoned the cake contained milk, wheat, and eggs, therefore it must be an acceptable breakfast. His wife on the other hand recognized that all the sugar in both the cake and the icing was detrimental to the well being of the children.

But if resveratrol is such a good and powerful aid to fighting the destructive free radicals that ravage and prematurely age the body, then shouldn't we use it?

Sure! Just not from wine. What these news stories always fail to mention is that there are much better sources for resveratrol than wine.

What!? Really!?

Yes!!!

Some of the best sources of resveratrol are red delicious apples, watermelon, grapes, and berries.

Apples not only contain resveratrol in greater abundance than in wine but they also contain many other health promoting substances; and no toxins.

The other thing you have probably heard of in connection with wine is the "French paradox".

The "French Paradox" comes from an observation that mortality rates from coronary heart disease is relatively low in France despite high levels of dietary saturated fat and also cigarette smoking. This led to the idea that drinking red wine could provide protection from heart disease.

Of course in actual studies, this theory has never been proven.

A much more likely reason for the "French Paradox" is simply that the traditional French diet contains many more fruits and vegetables than the standard American diet. Also the saturated fats that they use are much more often the good saturated fats, like olive oil, which are actually protective to the cells of the body.

So, if you want to get your daily resveratrol then do what your grandmother said and eat an apple a day to keep the doctor away.

Just eat a high quality natural foods diet, exercise, drink plenty of good clean water, make sure you get fiber (whole raw foods), get plenty of sleep, breathe deeply and have a gratitude attitude.

Your body will take care of you, if you take care of it.
