Phytonutrients: What are they? How do you get them?

February 28th, 2008

Phyto is a prefix referring to plants. The chemicals that are found in plants are referred to as phytochemicals. The phytochemicals that are found to be bio-active and helpful to the human body are called phytonutrients.

Phytonutrients are credited with fighting off cancer, reducing heart disease and osteoporosis, repairing nerves, and even healing and reversing the effects of aging. They boost our bodies' antioxidant capabilities. They have been tauted as the solution for ending Alzheimer's disease. In fact, it's been speculated that if we used phytonutrients correctly we could end nearly all diseases.

Once scientists started to recognize phytonutrients and all the wonderful things they could do to help the human body to be healthy, they started looking for more of them. They have found literally thousands of them. A recent Internet search found over 500,000 pages with something to say about phytonutrients.

I'm sure that you have heard the names of some of them. Flavonoids, isoflavones, and carotenoids are some of the more common names. Of course, as soon as they were discovered, people started making supplements to sell and drugs to push that were based on phytonutrients.

Since the beginning of that craze, we have learned some interesting things. The first, of course, being that there are thousands of phytonutrients. The second being that phytonutrient supplementation can be a bit tricky. There have been several studies, for instance, that showed that too much beta carotene (a phytonutrient) can have some less-than-healthy side effects.

Thus we see one of the problems with our drug and supplement approach to health. Generally speaking drugs and supplements are an overload of some particular substance. But in health, the key is always balance. That is why you will see so many people who have gone the drug or supplement route who have many, many bottles of stuff to take every day. They take one, but that causes an imbalance in some other area of the body, so a second is prescribed. That in turn causes some other imbalance. The process continues until they are so messed up, they give up. Or sometimes they die.

The thing to realize is that all those wonderful phytonutrients came from plants. And mostly from wonderful whole foods that we can eat. When you eat them, you get the phytonutrients in the proportion that the Creator intended. Natures balance is always a better solution than man's attempt to micro-manage something that he is really only beginning to understand.

If you want to make sure that your body is getting plenty of phytonutrients to keep you healthy, make sure you are eating plenty of good, raw foods.

Just eat a high quality natural foods diet, exercise, drink plenty of good clean water, make sure you get fiber (whole raw foods), get plenty of sleep, breathe deeply and have a gratitude attitude.

Your body will take care of you, if you take care of it.
