My First Marathon LessonAugust 25th, 2008
It was in 1987 I think.
I had gone back to school at Mesa Community College and I had some eligibility left so I had joined the cross-country team. I did fairly well for an old guy (I was born in 1956), usually running as the 5th or 6th man on the team. Well, the season ended around the first of November. I got a bit lazy and didn't run much for the rest of November and into December. Then about mid way through December we were over at my mother-in-law's house and she mentioned that she had seen in the newspaper an announcement for the Fiesta Bowl Marathon. She said, "Layne, you have always talked about running a marathon, why don't you run this one? I'll pay the entry fee for you." I thought, "Well, I have always wanted to run one, and I'm not in too bad of shape just coming off of the cross-country season. Why not." I agreed. The problem was the marathon was in two weeks. I started to workout again and did several long runs of 6 to 8 miles before marathon day. I just thought I would take it easy and enjoy a nice long run. Hey, I had done 20 mile runs in High School. So, the race started on a beautiful day. I felt good. The weather was nice. I was soon clipping along at an easy 7 minute per mile pace. I considered slowing down, but I felt really good and comfortable. Until at about 12 miles into the race. Suddenly my upper right leg got very tight. I instantly slowed to about a 10 minute mile pace. By the time I got to about mile 17, it was just too tight. I was probably doing about 12 minute miles, but then had to go to a walk. I walked the next 9 miles. (There was no way I wasn't going to finish.) I gathered up all my intestinal fortitude and ran the last 100 yards to the finish line. All together it had taken me 4 hours and 40 minutes. Much different than the 3 hour workout I was thinking it might be. It took me several months to fully recover. Lesson #1 - Never run a marathon that you haven't trained for. Duh! Coach G. Success in health comes from lifestyle described here.
