CRP: The New Scapegoat & Inflammation Fighter

March 24th, 2008

Medical science has finally started to admit that cholesterol is not the big bad wolf that they tried to make it out to be. Half of all people who have strokes or heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels.

So now they have identified the new culprit to make excuses to sell drugs with.

The new culprit is CRP. CRP stands for C-Reactive Protein. C-Reactive Protein is a protein that reacts to inflammation in the body. When you have more inflammation, your CRP levels are higher. People with higher CRP levels are more prone to heart attacks and strokes.

The solution, they say, is to get tested for CRP. It is a blood test. Of course, a test is not a solution. But it could give them a reason to prescribe a drug for you.

The question you should be asking is, "What causes inflammation in the body?"

Inflammation is a natural process that occurs when your body tries to rush healing processes to the site of a problem. The problem could be caused by toxins, foreign substances (including bacteria or viruses), or damaged and dying cells (which could be caused by a cut or a blunt force injury).

The inflammatory response allows the body to discard the bad stuff and cause healing in the affected area. This is, of course, a very important response for your body to make.

A drug that would turn off this response would not be such a great idea. However many people take these types of drugs all the time. They are called anti-inflammatories. They have many side effects.

Anti-inflammatory drugs include:
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs - such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen)
   Corticosteroids (such as prednisone)
   Anti-malarial medications (such as hydroxychloroquine)
Other medications including methotrexate, sulfasalazine, leflunomide, anti-TNF medications, cyclophosphamide and mycophenolate.

One of the biggest reasons that people take anti-inflammatory drugs is to get rid of headaches. But let me explain the most common side effects of theses drugs. They can cause damage to both the kidneys and the liver. They can cause gastrointestinal problems, including diarrhea and constipation. And they cause dizziness and headaches.

So, if headache medicine causes headaches, what should we do?

Look for the cause of the headache and then try to eliminate it.

Is the headache caused by not enough drugs in the system? NO!

Headaches can be caused by a number of things, but the most common causes are stress and dehydration. Stress comes in many forms and is caused by many things. The best way to eliminate stress is to make sure you are getting good nutrition, good sleep, good exercise, good water, and use prayer and meditation to help you relax with a thankful heart.

If you have a headache, the first thing to do when you recognize that you have one is to drink two cups of water. Then breathe deeply and relax. Breathing deeply involves slowly blowing all the air out of your lungs (like you are trying to blow out birthday candles), then inhaling deeply to fill your lungs with fresh air. Fifteen to twenty minutes later, if the headache is still there, drink two more cups of water and continue to breath deeply and try to relax with prayer and meditation. Repeat the process for an hour if the headache persists that long.

Toxins in one form or another are the major causes of stress and inflammation. Strive to eliminate toxins from all your food and water sources. Drugs are toxins. Many supplements are also toxins. Herbs can also be toxins. Get your nutrition from whole raw foods as much as possible. Organically grown fruits and vegetables have less toxins than traditionally grown food. Be sure and get good fats by eating nuts and seeds. Eat whole grains that are unprocessed (sprouted is great). Drink plenty of good, clean water. Remember that the chlorine in tap water is a toxin.

Just eat a high quality natural foods diet, exercise, drink plenty of good clean water, make sure you get fiber (whole raw foods), get plenty of sleep, breathe deeply and have a gratitude attitude.

Your body will take care of you, if you take care of it.
