How Healthy Is The Water You Are Drinking?January 9th, 2008
Isn't it crazy how a subject as plain as water can have so many different aspects and ideas surrounding it?
Of course if you are surrounded by water you are an island. :-) Go into a grocery store and you will see all kinds of filtered-bottled-flavored-enhanced water for sale. Talk to health fanatics and you'll get all kinds of recommendations for this type of water or that type of water. So, let's talk about water. Nothing lives without water. Why? What does water do in the human body? Water is in fact what allows everything to move. It is a lubricant, messenger, and delivery boy. What water does for the body may surprise you in some ways. For instance, many people have high blood pressure because they don't have enough water in their bodies. Water is, of course, a major component of blood. If you are chronically dehydrated your body cannot make enough blood to do all the things that it would like to be able to do. Therefore it manages the existing blood supply to do what is necessary. Your body will prioritize what it wants to do and then take turns doing those things. If you just ate, it will move the blood supply to get the proper nutrients to the stomach and intestines for digestion. The body of course must use muscles to squeeze the correct amount of blood to a given area to do the job. This of course raises the blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure make sure you are getting your 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. An even better rule of thumb is to take your weight in pounds and divide that number by 10. The result is the number of cups of water you should drink in a day. Oh, by the way, that is the amount of water you should drink on a relaxing day. If you are exercising hard and sweating a lot you should drink even more. Of course these are just general rules and must be used with common sense. If you find yourself going to the restroom to urinate more often than once per hour you may be drinking too much. It is possible to drink too much water, but not very easy. The few times that people have actually developed water poisoning from drinking too much water they were drinking a gallon or more per hour. The much bigger problem in our world is not getting enough water. Water is also what allows the body to transport nutrients to cells, as well as to flush out toxins. Of course, if the water that you take into your body is already saturated with "stuff" then the body first has to deal with whatever that may be. That is why clean water is so important to health. That is also why drinking a soda, or coffee, or alcohol or even fruit juice doesn't count as getting your 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. They are already saturated with stuff that then has to be dealt with by the body. Good clean water can be put to work immediately to take care of business. The water in a cup of coffee may not even be enough to washout the toxins introduced in the coffee. Water that is flavored or sugared is not healthy. Yes, you may be getting water, but you are also introducing toxins which then require an excess of body resources to eliminate. You might ask, "But isn't there enough water in a soda to washout the toxins it contains?" Well, even if there was enough water, it still doesn't supply the vitamins and minerals and other resources that the body requires to clean and rebuild itself. Therefore, it is a drain on the system overall. What about mineral water? The question is, does it contain the minerals that the body needs without any toxins? Distilled water is the cleanest water you can get and therefore the most health beneficial using the above theory. Some people have told me that they need to drink mineral water to get all the minerals that they need. I would prefer that you get your vitamins and minerals from fresh, locally grown produce. That's where most of your nutrients should come from. However, I will admit that if you can get fresh local spring water it can even be superior to distilled water. Of course, it depends on the spring and you will have to investigate that yourself. One of the great advantages of spring water besides getting the local trace minerals which (generally speaking) are good for your health, is that the earth gives spring water an electrical vibration that actually helps to enhance human health. I am lucky enough to live near a great spring. I personally know of at least two people who lived well into their nineties with no major health problems who regularly drank the spring water. You will hear from people who tell you to drink "Willard" water or "Alkaline" water, or some other magic water. Generally speaking, there isn't anything wrong with these products. But they are generally expensive and you can do just as well if you are drinking good clean water and eating good clean food. For instance, the "alkaline" water will help you if your body is too acidic, but eating good whole grain wheat and raw fruits and vegetables will do the same thing. In other words just eliminating the junk food will generally solve the acidic problem. I'll leave you with a couple of warnings. Chlorinated and fluoridated water should be avoided like the plague. Chlorine kills thing. That's why they put it in the water. When you drink it, it continues it's killing ways. It kills the good bacteria in the gut that help with digestion. When digestion is weakened then you can't get all the good stuff from your food even if you are eating well. Fluoride is also a toxin and one of its side effects is that it causes the body to store heavy metals in soft tissue. For instance, aluminum in the brain, which is considered a cause of Alzheimer's. So drink to your health with good clean water, and keep your system clean. Just eat a high quality natural foods diet, exercise, drink plenty of good clean water, make sure you get fiber (whole raw foods), get plenty of sleep, breathe deeply and have a gratitude attitude. Your body will take care of you, if you take care of it. Coach G. Success in health comes from lifestyle described here.
