Calorie Shifting Diets

February 19th, 2008

One of the fads right now is "Calorie Shifting Diets".

If you try to find out about it, nearly every link you find is connected to someone trying to sell one of the programs. So, I'll tell you all about it.

The theory is that you can trick your metabolism into staying reved up even though you are eating a low calorie diet.

The first thing that you notice of course is that they are talking about calorie intake and therefore have no concept of how you really lose weight. They don't talk about how to increase your metabolism, they only say that if you vary the number of calories that you eat that you will fool your body so that it doesn't lower your metabolism.

There are no scientific studies to back up this idea.

If you look at some of the forums where they talk about these diets you will find that the real secret to success is actually tied up in drinking plenty of water (at least 64 ounces a day) and eating often (at least four meals a day). If you will recall, you learned here on this site that eating at least every 3 hours during the day will keep your body from going into famine mode to store fat. You also learned that drinking plenty of water is very important for allowing the body to flush out all the junk it doesn't want to keep. You also learned that calories have almost nothing to do with losing or gaining weight.

You will also notice on these diet sites that even though they advertise that you don't have to exercise to lose weight if you are using their program, they strongly encourage you to exercise. That is of course because without exercise of some type you cannot increase your metabolism.

Think with me for a moment here. If the theory behind calorie shifting were true, then wouldn't everyone who ever cheated on a low calorie diet have had great success at losing weight?

That obviously doesn't happen, so we can throw that theory out the window.

What works every time?

Eat good wholesome natural foods, get plenty of water, plenty of rest, and regular exercise. Fresh raw natural fruits and vegetables are very important. Eat them multiple times everyday. Make sure that your diet also includes whole grains (particularly wheat).

Caution: Bread that you bought in the store that claims to be made of whole wheat, generally isn't actually made of whole grains. They can claim "whole wheat" on the label if they add a little whole wheat. If the label says "100% whole wheat", then why are there any other ingredients listed?

Hmmm??????

Never trust packaging labels. But that's a subject for another day.

Just eat a high quality natural foods diet, exercise, drink plenty of good clean water, make sure you get fiber (whole raw foods), get plenty of sleep, breathe deeply and have a gratitude attitude.

Your body will take care of you, if you take care of it.
