Antioxidants: Increase Cancer Risk? Should You Supplement?

January 30th, 2008

You may have seen or heard about the recent study reported from Mayo Clinic. Unfortunately the headline is once again misleading. This report came from analysis of 12 trials that had previously been reported on. The analysis showed that there was no statistically significant decrease in cancer incidence from antioxidant supplementation. There was even an increase in cancer among smokers who supplemented with beta carotene.

Does this mean that supplementing with antioxidants will increase your risk of cancer? No. Only in the specific incident of beta carotene for smokers.

Smokers of course already have a problem with health and they need to be very careful about any kind of drug or supplementation. Health is all about balance. Anything that knocks the system out of balance can be a contributing factor in health problems.

However this study does remind us that supplements are not magic pills. Nutritional supplements of all kinds can be as dangerous as drugs. We need to recognize that we need to be tested and/or analyzed to determine if we even need to supplement. If you have a deficiency then supplementation can be a great help. However most people who buy supplements have never had a doctor tell them that they need it. Usually they are simply reacting to some advertisement or the recommendation of a friend.

Why not supplement?

If you are not deficient in a particular nutrient but still supplement with it, what is the effect? Well that depends on the supplement and your state of overall health. The supplement could overload the delicate balance in the body and act like a drug, causing side effects and all kinds of trouble.

Most supplements sold and used today are not needed. They are simply another challenge for the body to deal with. Believe it or not you can get all your nutrition without supplementation if you just eat good raw whole foods.

On the other hand, if you are going to continue to eat the Standard American Diet (SAD) you had better be at least taking a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement. These things are missing from your diet.

It is important to get as many antioxidants as you can in our polluted world. But they will do you more good and be better for you if you get them from eating whole natural foods. Whole natural foods get you what you need and help to keep the body in balance at the same time.

If you feel that you have a problem that you really need to supplement for, talk to a nutritionist. One of the safest ways to supplement would be to use "tonic herbs". These are herbs that help to balance body systems. Always look for balance. Don't cause imbalances just because something did some good for someone else.

Just eat a high quality natural foods diet, exercise, drink plenty of good clean water, make sure you get fiber (whole raw foods), get plenty of sleep, breathe deeply and have a gratitude attitude.

Your body will take care of you, if you take care of it.
